GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KFGO) – U.S. Border Patrol in Grand Forks says it has seized a boat and issued a fine to a fishing guide in Minnesota that failed to properly report his return to the United States.
Border Patrol says the man works as a fishing guide east of International Falls and last month made landfall in Canada by boat. When the man returned to the United States, Border Patrol says he did not report his arrival.
Border Patrol wants to remind boaters that on international waters, if you anchor, come into contact with others on the water, or make landfall in another country, you must immediately report to Border Patrol when back in the United States.
Border Patrol says it offers a mobile app and kiosks for proper reporting. Failing to report can result in seizure and a minimum fine of $5,000.
“We encourage everyone to take advantage of the recreational opportunities our international waters have to offer, but it’s imperative that you’re familiar with reporting requirements to avoid violations of law.” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Michael W. Hanson.
