COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of North Dakota junior forward Jasper Weatherby picked up his first career National Collegiate Hockey Conference Forward of the Week after his performance in No. 1/2 North Dakota’s sweep of visiting Denver last week. The Ashland, Ore., native becomes the 12th Fighting Hawk weekly honoree this season and the fourth different UND player to win the forward award (Shane Pinto 2, Grant Mismash, Mark Senden). Fighting Hawk forwards have won the weekly award in five of the eight weeks in which they were eligible.
Weatherby tallied goals both nights and compiled four points to power North Dakota to a sweep of rival Denver last weekend. In Friday’s series opener, he scored the game’s first goal unassisted late in the first period, which turned out to be the game-winner in a 3-0 victory. The next night, the San Jose Sharks draft pick recorded a career-high three points in a 5-2 victory on two goals and an assist, again scoring the game’s opening tally.
Weatherby finished the weekend with three goals, an assist, nine shots on goal and a +3 plus/minus. With goals both nights, he stretched his goal-scoring streak to four games with five goals in that span. On the season, Weatherby has 12 points on eight goals and four assists.
UND will close out its regular season with four straight games against ninth-ranked Omaha. The series begins this weekend with three at Ralph Engelstad Arena, two coming this Friday and Saturday with the finale Mar. 5.
