WASHINGTON (KFGO) – On “News and Views”, North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer said he’s continuing to block President Donald Trump’s nominees until his administration changes a Biden-era wetlands rule.
He believes it violates private property rights by creating setbacks for drain tile from wetland easements. They are part of private land U.S. Fish and Wildlife bought decades ago to protect wetlands.
That department and the Natural Resources Conservation Service have different rules for drain tile setbacks.
“They used these predatory practices to not only get the wetland to get the easement, but then move the goalposts,” Cramer said.
Cramer explained his conversations with Fish and Wildlife officials.
“They are for us, they’re just ignorant about this issue. They don’t relate to it. They don’t understand the flyways. They don’t understand farming around these wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region. They go with their, sort of, gut,” Cramer said.
“Our administration is dedicated to protecting both the wetland easements purchased by the FWS that are necessary to protect our conservation heritage as well as the private landowners’ use of their lands outside the easement boundaries,” Fish and Wildlife said on social media.
