MOORHEAD, Minn. — What if, for one afternoon, families could put down their phones, walk through a field, discover a bird overhead, taste something grown nearby, meet a farmer, plant flowers for the bees and simply enjoy being together?
On Sunday, September 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Lee & Noreen Thomas Farm will open its doors for A Chef’s Table – A Day on the Farm, a hands-on celebration of farming, food, nature and community.
This isn’t a day where visitors simply stand and watch. It’s a day to participate.
Guests can watch an NDSU automatic soil sampler at work, see a Weed Zapper demonstration, help plant a pollinator garden, meet dairy goats, and ask experienced organic farmers the questions they have always wanted to ask.
For children and families, the farm becomes one big outdoor classroom. The Red River Zoo will present a special children’s program at 1 p.m., along with barrel train rides, a photo booth, hands-on art with Lynn Park, and simple spinning and weaving with sheep fiber led by Karin Bloom.
Visitors can also go birding with Kelly from Audubon and explore edible and useful plants with the Fumbling Forager.
And because farming ultimately brings us back to food, guests can test their knowledge with “Do You Know Beans About Beans?”, experience local food, and shop a Farmers Market from 1–3 p.m.
The event is designed to bring together people who may not normally find themselves in the same place—farmers and families, children and grandparents, gardeners and scientists, artists and conservationists.
You don’t have to be a farmer to belong on a farm. You just have to be curious.
Come for an hour or stay for the day. Ask questions. Meet an animal. Plant something. Taste something local. Talk with a farmer. Let the kids get a little dirty.
Most importantly, come experience the connections between healthy soil, healthy food, wildlife, farmers and healthy communities.
Sign up on Eventbrite for A Chef’s Table – A Day on the Farm.
