(KNFL/KFGO) – The UND Fighting Hawks would begin the NCAA Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, against the Merrimack Warriors. North Dakota would end up putting the hammer down.
UND would start the scoring at the 3:52 mark of the 1st period, as Cody Croal would cash in, being assisted by Will Zellers and Andrew Strathmann. It would stay 1-0 UND after the 1st and 2nd periods of play. But North Dakota would get some insurance from Dylan James, as he would make it 2-0 Fighting Hawks at the 4:09 mark of the 3rd period. Ellis Rickwood and Will Zellers would get the assists. Finally, Merrimack would take out their goalie late in the 3rd. That’s when Cody Croal would get his 2nd goal of the night on an empty netter, that would be assisted by EJ Emery, sealing the 3-0 win for North Dakota.
The Fighting Hawk’s rookie goalie, Jan Spunar, would stop all 31 shots from Merrimack, in another impressive performance.
UND will take on Quinnipiac Saturday evening in the Regional Final, for a chance to clinch the Frozen Four in Las Vegas.
