FARGO (KFGO-KVRR) — Cass County’s Public Safety Task Force has finalized its recommendations for making Fargo more safe.
The task force finds behavioral health, and not traditional crime, is the main public safety issue in the county.
According to the task force, law enforcement frequently responds to behavioral health situations that, they say, would be better addressed through healthcare and community services.
Another issue is mental health services are fragmented through multiple organizations.
The task force’s recommendations include the development of a behavioral health care response model and the re-establishment of Crisis Intervention Team Training.
“We end up utilizing jails and law enforcement to really deal with behavioral health issues that they’re really not designed to do,” said Cass County Commissioner Joel Vettel. “And so part of the task force really was to really help outline some of those key factors.”
The task force plans to take its recommendations to the state legislature next session.
