FARGO (KFGO-KVRR) — Several people have gathered to protest Flock cameras in the metro Friday, Aug. 21.
The protests were spread out, with folks congregating at multiple Flock locations throughout Fargo and Moorhead.
People were able to sign up online to claim a spot, though several spots were still unclaimed as of 4:30.
The protest was organized by Faith & Conviction Coalition as well as Red River United Indivisible and other local groups.
We talked with Barry Nelson, who was protesting with his granddaughter on 10th Avenue South.
“We just are trying to raise awareness to the people and the public that this kind of surveillance is going on on a 24/7 in their community,” Nelson said. We have 26 cameras in Fargo, we have 53 cameras in West Fargo, we have eight cameras in Moorhead. There’s a lot of data being captured constantly about people going about their business.”
Flock and other Automated License Plate Readers have gotten pushback from privacy advocates.
The Duluth Police Department just recently announced that they do not plan to renew their contract with Flock.
