BATTLE LAKE, Minn. (KFGO-KBRF) – What began as a goal to raise enough money to send 20 veterans to Washington, D.C., became a celebration of patriotism, generosity, and community at the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN Golf Tournament on August 10 at Balmoral Golf Course.
Organizer Kim Peterson says the event raised $45,000 for the Honor Flight through sponsorships, donations, games, drawings, and the tournament’s first-ever silent auction. 144 golfers came together to support the mission, including 35 veterans proudly wearing tournament shirts. There were 129 sponsors and contributors as businesses, organizations, and individuals stepped up to make a difference.
Golfers played with a purpose, volunteers worked tirelessly, sponsors gave generously, and the entire community rallied around one common goal. And together, they surpassed it.
Peterson says that because of the incredible outpouring of support, approximately 20 veterans will now experience an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. They will have the opportunity to visit the memorials built in their honor, reflect on their service, share the experience with fellow veterans, and receive the gratitude of a community that has not forgotten their sacrifice.
The Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN is a 100% volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free trips to Washington, D.C., for veterans from eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. Four flights are planned in 2026, with a fundraising goal of $1.4 million to cover flights, food, lodging, and activities.
The next Veterans Honor Flight Golf Tournament is already scheduled for Monday, August 9, 2027.
