BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – Vision Zero says that at the halfway point of the year, traffic deaths are slightly up compared to this time last year. 46 people have died on North Dakota roads since January 1, compared to 43 deaths at this time last year.
Since the beginning of the 100 deadliest days of summer, which starts on memorial day and ends on labor day, 14 people have died.
Vision Zero says more than half of the people killed in vehicles with seatbelts this year were not wearing one. North Dakota has seen 20 people not wearing a seatbelt die on the roads compared to 13 at this point last year. Speed-related traffic deaths have nearly doubled, going up from six to 11.
“Summer is meant to be a time to enjoy everything North Dakota has to offer, but every life lost on our roads is a tragedy that affects families, friends and entire communities,” said Karin Mongeon, director of the NDDOT Highway Safety Division. “The good news is that every driver and passenger has the ability to save lives by taking personal responsibility every time they get in a vehicle.”
Vision Zero encourages everyone to do their part by buckling up and following the rules of the road.
