(KNFL/KFGO) – The Moorhead Spuds have had a season to remember this year. Moorhead played their first ever season in Class 6A, the highest ranked class in Minnesota High School Football. There were a lot of doubters of the Moorhead Spuds, as many didn’t think Moorhead would fit in Class 6A. Moorhead would prove those doubters wrong, as going into tonight, they would be one step away from their first Prep Bowl title since 1987.
In their first season in Class 6A, Moorhead was bracing for a lot of change, especially since all of their competition is in the cities, as well as being the toughest competition in the state. Moorhead would lose their star quarterback , Jett Feeney, one of the best quarterbacks in the state, to injury in the beginning stages of the season. But, despite being at 3-4 midway in the season, Moorhead would win out going into the 6A State Tournament, getting Jett Feeney back in a 51-44 win over Edina. The Spuds had one of the most explosive offenses in the entire state. Besides Jett Feeney, the offense of Moorhead includes playmakers like wide receiver David Mack, and running back Taye Reich. Moorhead would defeat Blaine 38-21 in the first round of the 6A playoffs, followed by a 64-48 victory over Woodbury. Moorhead had defeated Woodbury in Week 2 34-27.
The State Quarterfinals would come around, and Moorhead would take down #1 seed Centennial 35-21, to punch their ticket to U.S. Bank Stadium. In the State Semis, Moorhead would upset Lakeville South 26-14, which would set up a rematch against Edina in the Prep Bowl. Spuds QB Jett Feeney, would go head to head with Edina quarterback, Mason West, who’s also one of the best quarterbacks in the state of Minnesota. Despite a Cinderella Story for Moorhead, the Spuds would fall just short, as Edina would take home the 6A Prep Bowl title. It was a back and forth battle the entire way, ending in a 42-35 final score.
