(KFGO/KNFL) New London-Spicer had one last chance. Trailing 26-21 to DGF in the Minnesota Class AAA football final, the Wildcats were 48 yards from the endzone with four seconds left. NL-S needed a wing and a prayer.
Or a wing and a lateral.
Quarterback Blake Schultz completed a pass to Grant Paffrath. As Paffrath was about to be wrapped by DGF’s Brody Friend at the Rebels’ 14, Paffrath lateraled the ball to teammate Brycen Christensen who dashed into the endzone for the winning score as time expired to give NL-S a 27-26 win on Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The improbable play happened shortly after DGF running back Jordan Summers completed a 95-yard scoring drive with a 19-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left to give the Rebels a 26-21 lead. Summers rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries.
Trailing 21-14 going into the final quarter, DGF quarterback Owen Leach scored on a 2-yard keeper in the opening seconds of the quarter to make it 21-20, but the Rebels missed the extra point. The Wildcats threatened on the ensuing possession, driving inside the Rebels’ 10-yard-line, but the DGF defense held which set up for the 95-yard scoring march.
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton finishes the season 12-1.
