BROOKINGS, S.D.(UND Athletics) – The University of North Dakota fell to South Dakota State 72-54 on Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena. A slow third quarter doomed the Fighting Hawks as they were outscored 24-11.
The Fighting Hawks shot 42.6 percent from the field, 9.1 percent from beyond the arch, and 87.5 percent from the line. While the Jackrabbits shot 41.4 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from beyond the arch, and 73.7 percent from the line.
Kacie Borowicz led the Fighting Hawks 14 points. Ten of her 14 points came in the fourth quarter. She secured seven rebounds and had five assists.
Melissa Leet followed closely behind Borowicz with 13 points. She had five assists, two blocks, and two rebounds.
Claire Orth and Olivia Lane netted eight points each. Orth ended the afternoon with three steals, two rebounds, and two assists.
Joli Daninger led UND with nine rebounds. She netted five points, had three steals, and four assists.
Sammiyah Hoskin ended the evening with four points, four rebounds and one block.
The Fighting Hawks took the initial lead going up 2-0 before the Jackrabbits hit their first three of the evening to take their first lead. Daninger responded with a three to give UND the lead again, but the Jackrabbits scored to again take the lead. UND tied it (7-7) seconds later, but SDSU’s Tori Nelson hit a three to give them the lead. The teams netted a basket each to end the quarter with SDSU leadin 12-9.
The battle continued in the second quarter as the Jackrabbits scored the first four points to put them up by seven. Daninger scored a jumper in the paint to stop SDSU’s run. The teams traded baskets as the quarter continued. Leet scored a layup to bring to Hawks within four, but the Jackrabbits scored a basket and free throw to push the lead further out. Leet scored the final layup of the half, but UND was unable to surpass the Jackrabbits, who headed into the half up 28-23.
A slow start for North Dakota allowed the Jackrabbits to start the second half with a 7-0 run. The Fighting Hawks’ first basket came at 6:43 from Orth to keep them within ten. SDSU continued to attack, but UND adjusted to keep them within ten towards the middle of the quarter. The Jackrabbits went on an 11-0 run as the third winded down. The Fighting Hawks struggled to overcome the runs as they ended the quarter being outscored 24-11. The Jackrabbits headed into the fourth with an 18-point lead (52-34).
In the final quarter of the game, SDSU was the first to score, but Orth scored a layup off a fast break to respond. As the quarter continued, it was a back-and-forth battle until the Jackrabbits had two back-to-back threes and a three-point play to give them a 9-0 run and extend their lead. Borowicz stopped the run with a jumper. She secured a steal on the next defensive play, which Lane converted to bucket to give UND a 4-0 run. The run continued as Lane and Borowicz netted back-to-back shots to extend it to a 10-0 run. The late rally would not be enough as the Fighting Hawks fell 72-54.
Paiton Burckhard led SDSU on offense with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. Haleigh Timmer followed with 14 points and two rebounds.
North Dakota will return to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center to host the Omaha Mavericks on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.
