ITHACA, N.Y. – (UND Athletics) No. 9/8 Cornell rallied from a third period deficit to defeat No. 6/7 North Dakota, 5-3, and complete the weekend sweep on Saturday night from Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.
UND (3-4-0) led 3-2 going into the final 20 minutes, but Cornell (2-0-0) struck twice in the opening eight minutes to take the lead and added an empty netter to secure its fourth straight victory over North Dakota.
Sacha Bosivert paced the Fighting Hawks with his third multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist while Dylan James (4), Louis Jamernik V (2) and Boisvert (2) all found the back of the net for the visitors.
Hobie Hedquist earned his second start of the season after a 16-save relief performance last night, but surrendered four goals on 27 shots to drop to 0-2-0 on the year.
After striking for a few early ones on Friday, Cornell jumped out to an early lead once again as Jake Kraft pounced on a rebound at the side of the net to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead just under three minutes into the contest.
UND’s penalty kill took over in the remainder of the first period, killing off a trio of power play opportunities for the Big Red to keep the deficit at just a goal after 20 minutes of play. Hedquist was big in the opening 20 minutes as well, stopping 10-of-11 shots for the visitors.
Play started to open up in the second period, as both teams were getting chances. After Jamernik V nearly tied the game on a shorthanded breakaway, Cornell doubled the advantage on a snipe from Jack O’Leary to make it 2-0 for the hosts at the exact midway point of the contest.
The two-goal advantage didn’t last for long; however, as James struck for the second time on the weekend on a 3-on-2 rush just 14 seconds later to pull the Fighting Hawks back within a goal at 2-1.
James’ tally seemed to awaken North Dakota’s offensive attack, as Jamernik V made a great play to get around his defender and tuck the tying goal through the legs of goaltender Ian Shane in the final four minutes of the period before Boisvert gave UND the lead for the first time all weekend with a beautiful individual effort late in the middle stanza.
Cornell brought the game even just seconds into the third, as Ryan Walsh found himself alone in front and tucked a shot through the legs of Hedquist to quickly knot the contest at 3-3. The Big Red then took the lead once again on a wraparound strike from Tim Rego to go in front, 4-3, with just under 12 minutes to play.
The Big Red added an empty netter in the final 90 seconds to seal the victory and the weekend sweep.
