MILACA, Minn. – Authorities in central Minnesota are investigating a floatplane crash on Lake Mille Lacs Friday afternoon that left the pilot dead.
According to the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office, two planes took off from the Anoka County Airport and were planning to make a brief water landing before continuing to Aitkin County.
Deputies said the first plane landed successfully, but the other one crashed into the lake where it is 26 feet deep, and the pilot, a 47-year-old man was stuck inside.
Mille Lacs County Sheriff Kyle Burton said the plane and man’s body were recovered around 10 p.m. Friday.
Burton said the National Transportation Safety Board will begin an investigation into the crash Saturday.
