DASSEL, MINN. – A woman who played a Munchkin in the 1939 classic movie “The Wizard of Oz” has a new gravestone in her hometown of Dassel, Minnesota. Hildred Olson died in 1958 and her small gravestone was mostly covered by grass.
Bill Ward of the Dassel History Center says they installed a new monument last weekend that resembles the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He says there’s a star for Hildred at the top of the stone, an etching of a picture of Hildred in her Munchkin costume, and the bottom says “Follow the Yellow Brick Road.”
Ward says they have a new exhibit at the museum featuring the history of Hildred Olson. There’s information on her growing up in Dassel, working in a vaudeville act, and getting hired by M-G-M for The Wizard of Oz.
