FARGO (KFGO) – Saturday, June 3 is the day. At least 350 hikers, most from the Fargo area, will be walking along segments of the 475 miles of North Dakota’s North Country Trail in just 24 hours starting at midnight Saturday.
The “Hike Every Mile” event will celebrate National Trails Day. The entire route stretches 4,800 miles across eight states, from North Dakota to Vermont. The trail enters North Dakota from Minnesota at Fort Abercrombie and ends at Lake Sakakawea State Park.
“Hike Every Mile”- North Dakota Committee Chair Rennae Gruchalla says those involved include families, scout and church groups.
There are usually six to 10 people in each segment that varies in distance from two miles to 12 miles.
Gruchalla says the primary goal is to enlighten people about what an honor it is to have a national scenic trail pass through North Dakota. She says she’s always surprised when people say they have never heard of it.
Once a segment is completed, each group is expected to report in and that segment will be posted on an online map by Jack Norland, president of the Dakota Prairie chapter of the North Country Trail Association who is tracking the Saturday hike.
