FARGO (KFGO) – A mix of comments during the public comment period at last night’s Fargo School Board meeting regarding the school district’s position about a new state transgender law.
Earlier this month, Superintendent Rupak Gandhi said the district would keep students safe instead of obeying the new law that creates a number of restrictions and policies related to transgender students. He also said the new state law is more than likely in violation of federal law. The school board supported Gandhi’s decision.
Pastor Martin Avery said the country has a strong history of dealing with situations that go against human rights and people push back against laws that are unjust and this is a case in point:
“Just because a law is a law doesn’t mean it’s a just law, and something that we would do well to follow,” Avery said. “So, I just want to throw my support behind Dr. Gandhi and the difficult work that you’re all doing. Just keep it up.”
Cassie Schmidt, a mother with the group, “Let Parents Decide That,” was among some of those who opposed Dr. Gandhi’s position. There was a brief argument and Schmidt’s time was cut short.
