(KFGO/KNFL) Evan Alexander had four extra-base hits and drove home six runs as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks won its 2023 home opener, 10-6 over Winnipeg before a crowd of 2,781 at Newman Outdoor Field.
Alexander gave the RedHawks the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 2-1. The Goldeyes responded in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs against F-M starter Kevin McGovern.
Fargo-Moorhead scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Novak added a single, and Alexander tripled in a pair of runs. Alexander tripled in BJ Lopez with two out in the fifth inning for another run, and added an RBI double in the eighth inning.
Winnipeg scored twice in the top of the ninth on four walks and a hit batsmen to cut the EedHawks lead to 10-6, and brought the tying run to the plate. F-M reliever Reid Birlingmair closed the game out in one batter, coaxing a game-ending 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Hidekel Gonzalez.
Kevin McGovern pitched five innings to earn to win, allowing six hits, four runs, three walks, and struck out four.
Fargo-Moorhead and Winnipeg will play game two of the three-game series on Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM.
