FARGO (KFGO) – We may be free of winter’s grip but there’s another frustrating natural headache on the horizon. That’s the area’s annual mosquito population.
Cass County Vector Control Director Ben Prather said typically, treating mosquito larvae begins around the third week of April.
It began later this spring due to all the snowfall and the late winter storms.
Prather pointed out that the previous two summers – with the dry conditions – Vector Control didn’t spray for mosquitoes in most areas.
“Most folks are making the same bold prediction that I am that it’s probably going to be worse than last year,” Prather said. “That’s purely on that fact that last year was so excellent. We’ve gone through two successive years of pretty significant dry conditions, very little rain, almost no thunderstorm activity. (We’re) hedging our bets a little bit and just saying, ‘yeah, it could be worse, but at this stage it’s a little early to tell one way or another.”
Prather said he has never seen two consecutive years with so few mosquitoes.
