GRANITE FALLS, Minn. (KFGO/WCCO) – A Willmar police officer has been identified as the person injured in a shooting Monday afternoon in Granite Falls.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Friday that Willmar police officer Jason Hay, who has 14 years of experience as an officer, was shot as he and another officer retreated from a home while serving a felony warrant.
Hay along with members of the CEE-VI (Cooperative Enforcement Effort) Drug Task Force went to a Granite Falls home to serve the warrant against William Schindler, 26, of Granite Falls. The BCA said a person inside the home opened the door, and when police announced who they were, someone in the home fired at them.
Hay, along with a Swift County deputy, fired their weapons. The BCA is not identifying the Swift County deputy due to the deputy working in an undercover capacity.
The BCA wrote Friday, “Hay was struck by a bullet as the officers retreated from the home. No one else was injured in the exchange of gunfire. Hay went to the hospital where he was treated and released.”
Schindler was eventually arrested following a standoff. He was taken to the Yellow Medicine County Jail to await charges in connection to this incident.
Multiple firearms and cartridge casings were reportedly found inside the home.
Portions of the incident were captured on squad and body-worn cameras. BCA agents are reviewing that footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
