GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Ethan Frisch struck 1:06 into overtime to pace North Dakota to a 5-4 victory over No. 14 Omaha on Friday night from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
The defenseman snuck down the slot and rocketed home a pass from Riese Gaber to give the Fighting Hawks (15-13-6, 9-10-4 NCHC) their third straight OT victory on a Friday night and extends the unbeaten streak to a season-long five straight.
In a contest that saw three goals in the final 3:55 of regulation, Omaha (18-12-3, 13-8-2 NCHC) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to knot the game at 3-3, but Dylan James answered back just 52 seconds later with his second tally of the night to quickly restore the NoDak lead.
With the goaltender pulled, Drew DeRidder stopped a one-timer from the slot, but Matt Miller pounced on a rebound to tie the game at 4-4 with 32 seconds remaining to send UND into overtime for the fifth straight time, a first in program history before Frisch’s winner capped off the victory and gave the Fighting Hawks a big two points in the NCHC standings.
After scoring only one goal in regulation last weekend at Colorado College, Jackson Kunz started the scoring early for the home team with a deflection on a Ty Farmer for his fifth goal of the season and 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the contest.
With the contest tied at 1-1 heading into the second, UND erupted for a pair of goals in the middle frame to jump in front, 3-1. Gavin Hain reached double-digits for the first time in his career, potting his 10th of the year on a rebound to restore the advantage before James skated by everyone and roofed it over the goaltender to increase the lead to two after 40 minutes of play.
The third period saw a combined four goals before Frisch’s overtime winner sealed the victory for the green and white.
North Dakota and No. 14 Omaha close out the regular season on Saturday night at 6:07 p.m. from the REA.
