BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of North Dakota women’s basketball team dropped its third straight game on Saturday afternoon, falling to South Dakota State, 105-72, from Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.
The defeat marks the 12th straight loss to SDSU and is the first time UND has allowed 100-plus points since February 1st, 2019 at Western Illinois, as the Fighting Hawks entered the contest ranked second in the Summit League in scoring defense.
Kacie Borowicz led the way once again for North Dakota, scoring 15 points and adding five assists for her 23rd straight game in double figures. The senior has now paced the team in points in each of the 15 games this season.
Claire Orth was the final Fighting Hawk in double figures, notching 10 points on an efficient 3-for-6 afternoon from the field to go alongside a trio of rebounds, an assist and a steal in 26 minutes of action.
It was South Dakota State who jumped out to the early lead, scoring 13 of the game’s first 15 points to take a 13-2 advantage less then four minutes into the contest. Following the timeout by NoDak, the visitors started to settle in, eventually clawing the deficit down to just five on a pair of free throws from Miranda VanderWal before the Jackrabbits closed the frame with a triple to take a 30-22 after 10 minutes.
Much like Thursday, it was the second quarter that saw the struggles return for North Dakota, with SDSU finishing with a 25-12 scoring advantage in the frame to build a 55-34 lead at the halftime break.
The Fighting Hawks couldn’t get closer in the second half, as South Dakota State closed out the 105-72 victory.
North Dakota returns to action on Thursday night against Omaha on 7 p.m. from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
