The North Dakota State (24-13, 12-4 Summit) baseball team opens its home schedule against Mayville State (16-21, 13-13 North Star) on Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field at 6:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
NDSU plated five runs in the fifth inning to top South Dakota State, 8-3, on Friday at Erv Huether Field. NDSU totaled 14 hits as a team with Peter Brookshaw going 3-of-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs. Druw Sackett also went 3-of-5 with two RBI and a run, while Logan Williams added a game-high three RBI with two hits and a run. Max Loven tossed seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings with one walk. Skyler Riedinger finished the final 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.
SUMMIT LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Max Loven was named Summit League Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season and third time in his career on Monday. Loven helped guide NDSU to an 8-3 win over South Dakota State last Friday. The left-handed pitcher tossed seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings with one walk and one run. It marked his seventh game this season with four or more strikeouts. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native registered a 1.29 ERA and limited the Jackrabbits to a .200 batting average.
Loven is the third different NDSU pitcher to earn the accolade this season. Evan Sankey was named Pitcher of the Week Feb. 21 and Feb. 28, while Tristen Roehrich picked up the honor on March 21.
NCBWA STOPPER OF THE YEAR MIDSEASON WATCH LIST
Senior right-handed pitcher Jake Drew and junior right-handed pitcher Tristen Roehrich have been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List. NDSU is one of only four schools in the nation with multiple players selected joining Michigan, Arizona and UCLA.
Drew has made 13 appearances on the mound this season with a 2-0 overall record. He boasts a 0.00 ERA over 14.2 innings pitched. The Alexandria, Minn., native has notched a career-high six saves this season, which is tied for ninth on the NDSU all-time single-season list. Drew also hasn’t allowed a hit in his last five appearances on the mound.
Roehrich has made 11 appearances this season with a 4-1 overall record. He has registered a 2.19 ERA over 37.0 innings. The West Fargo, N.D., native has fired 41 total strikeouts and has limited opponents to .207 batting average. Roehrich, who was named Summit League Pitcher of the Week on March 21, has also contributed a career-high five saves this season.
HITTING THE LONG BALL
The Bison have connected on 39 home runs, which ranks second in the Summit League and tied for ninth on the NDSU single-season list. Logan Williams is tied for first in the conference with 10 home runs, while Peter Brookshaw ranks tied for eighth and has launched a career-high six this season.
LIGHTS OUT
The Bison pitching staff has earned 14 saves this season, which ranks third on the NDSU all-time single-season list. Four different pitchers have contributed at least one save this season. Last season, NDSU set a program record with 27 total saves.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Bison pitching staff boasts a 3.98 ERA this season, which leads the Summit League and ranks 23rd in the nation. NDSU is slotted second in the Summit League and 37th in the nation in shutouts with three. The Bison also pace the conference and are positioned 24th in the country in sacrifice bunts with 27.
Individually, Max Loven leads the Summit League and ranks 17th in the country in games started with 11. Logan Williams also leads the conference in home runs (T-1st, 10), home runs per game (1st, 0.33) and runs batted in per game (1st, 1.13). Calen Schwabe paces the Summit League and ranks eighth in the nation in sacrifice bunts (10). He is also leading the conference and ranks sixth in the country in sacrifice bunts per game (.29).
ON HISTORIC PACE
Logan Williams has connected on a team-high 10 home runs this season. His 10 home runs are also the most in the NDSU Division I era in a single-season and tied for 11th overall on the NDSU all-time single season list.
Williams assembled a streak of seven games with a home run from March 15-March 27. The NCAA record for consecutive games with a with a home run is nine, which was set by Nevada’s Tyler Bosetti in 2021 from April 24-May 9.
Williams had a performance to remember at Northern Colorado with two grand slams and a career-high eight RBI to help the Bison to a 15-1 win. His eight RBI were the most in the NDSU Division I era and one shy of the program record of nine.
LOVEN CLIMBS THE RANKS
Max Loven has made 11 appearances on the bump this season and boasts a 6-3 overall record. He has fired 48 total strikeouts to increase his career total to 192, which positions him tied for fifth place on the all-time NDSU strikeout list. Loven has also totaled 235 innings pitched and is slotted in fifth place on the NDSU all-time innings pitched list. He’s one of only nine players in program history to pitch in 200 innings or more.
DREW CLOSES THINGS OUT
Jake Drew is 2-0 on the mound this season and has totaled a career-high six saves this season. He has contributed 10 saves over five seasons, which ranks seventh on the NDSU all-time saves list.
Additionally, Drew hasn’t allowed a hit in each of his last five appearances (5.2 innings) dating back to April 2 at Western Illinois.
SCOUTING MAYVILLE STATE
Mayville State begins the week with a 16-21 (13-13 North Star) overall record and most recently fell short against Valley City State, 2-1. Braxton Greenburg led the Comets tossing 11 strikeouts over 7.2 innings. Sammy Satrom also added one hit and one run.
THE SERIES VS. MAYVILLE STATE
This will be the 94th all-time meeting between NDSU and Mayville State. In their most recent meeting last season, the Bison scored six unanswered runs to pick up the 6-2 win over the Comets at Newman Outdoor Field. Jack Simonsen paced NDSU with three RBI, two hits and one run. However, Mayville State leads the all-time series that dates back to 1947, 33-30.
