IOWA – The North Dakota track and field teams resumed the Drake Relays and wrapped up the Kip Janvrin Open on Friday. In the two meets, the Fighting Hawks broke a school record, added an additional mark to the UND top-10 list, won an event title and placed in 14 events.
On the blue oval in Des Moines on Friday night, UND posted impressive times in the rarely ran 4×200-meter relays. The women’s relay squad of Jerzie Finstad, Mackenzie Severson, Elle Thorson and Brooklynn Gould broke the school record in the relay in a time of 1:42.01, improving the record set in 2011 of 1:45.51.
In the men’s 4×200-meter relay, the team of Max Baker, Alvin George, Aric David and Jory Vasek ran the No. 8 time in program history in the rarely ran event with a time of 1:31.35.
Natalie Mohring led North Dakota at the Kip Janvrin Open, winning the event title in the discus with a toss of 149-8 (45.62m).
Nelson Ruto placed third in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:36.37. Ruto ran his time on Thursday but results of the event were not official until all sections were ran and compiled together on Friday night.
UND placed in both sections of the pole vault in Indianola, with Harris Maclean taking fourth in the men’s section with a height of 14-5 1/4 (4.40m), while Kenzie Gullickson took eighth in the women’s pole vault with a clearance of 10-6 (3.20m).
North Dakota also placed in both sections of the javelin. David finished fourth in his section with a throw of 139-5 (42.50m) and Thorson led NoDak in her section with a personal-best mark of 107-2 (32.67m).
In the shot put, Allison Lardy finished fourth with a toss of 44-8 (13.61m).
The Fighting Hawk jumpers also impressed, with three different Hawks pacing the team in their respective events. Elise Ulseth took fifth in the long jump at the Drake Relays with a distance of 19-8 (5.99m). Autumn Stokes placed fifth in the triple jump at the Kip Janvrin Open with a leap of 38-7 1/2 (11.77m). Thorson led North Dakota in the long jump at Indianola with a PR jump of 18-2 1/4 (5.54m).
Mitchel Wangler was the top hurdler for UND at the Kip Janvrin Open, taking sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.87. Elaina Swartz placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:05.73. Severson just missed out on placing in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line ninth in a PR of 15.05.
Conny Wohlfahrt and Michaela Oosthuizen led the women’s distance squad, both placing sixth in their respective events. Wohlfahrt was sixth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:40.92 and Oosthuizen finished sixth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:15.92.
