FARGO, N.D.(NDSU Athletics)– The North Dakota State women’s basketball team picked up a 74-68 win over Denver on Thursday night at Scheels Center.
Emily Dietz registered 13 points to push her career total up to 1,004 over five seasons. The West Fargo, N.D., native became the 35th player in NDSU history and only the ninth in the Division I era to surpass 1,000 career points. Reneya Hopkins netted 14 points and notched a career-high seven rebounds to go along with a career-best six assists. Heaven Hamling also hit double figures in scoring for the 11th time this season with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
The Bison (6-8, 2-2 Summit) shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the field and a season-best 93.3 percent (14-15) from the free throw line. NDSU also netted 26 points in the paint and 16 second chance points.
Denver (5-9, 0-3 Summit) opened the contest stealing a 15-12 edge following the first quarter. NDSU bounced back in the second frame outscoring the Pioneers, 19-5, including eight unanswered to close the half. The Bison led at the intermission, 31-20. Olivia Skibiel paced NDSU at the break with a team-high seven points.
The Pioneers pushed back in the third quarter cutting the deficit down to three, 31-28, at the 6:41 mark following a triple from Meghan Boyd. NDSU once again retaliated assembling eight straight points capped off by a Kadie Deaton three-pointer to make the score 41-30 with 2:20 to play in the stanza. NDSU led after three quarters, 47-39.
Denver made one final surge in the fourth quarter trimming the edge down to one, 60-59, after Joclyen Wyatt connected on a layup and free throw with 3:52 to play. NDSU responded with a crucial 6-0 run to push their lead back up to seven, 66-59, following a jumper from Dietz at the 2:11 mark. The Bison closed out the remaining time to earn the 74-68 win.
NDSU continues its homestand against Omaha (5-8, 1-3 Summit) on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Scheels Center.
