ABERDEEN, S.D. (MSUM Athletics)– The Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team dropped an 80-76 nonconference decision to Sioux Falls in action Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM fell to 6-4 on the year while Sioux Falls improved to 4-3.
Sophomore forward Dane Zimmer had his fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. He finished 7-of-10 from the field.
Junior guard Bryce Irsfeld had 15 points, all coming in the first half, and led with six assists. Irsfeld is now 14 points away from 1,000 in his career.
Junior guard Lorenzo McGhee and freshman guard Jacob Beeninga had 10 points each for the Dragons. Junior guard Gavin Baumgartner had eight rebounds.
MSUM shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) while USF shot 45.5 percent (30-of-66). The Dragons committed 18 turnovers compared to seven for USF.
The Dragons trailed 68-60 with 6:59 left, but responded with a 14-1 run to take a 74-69 lead with 2:58. That run was capped off by a three-point play from Zimmer, and four points from junior forward Jaden Stanley-Williams.
The Cougars went on an 11-0 run over the next 2:54 to take an 80-74 lead, and that stretch proved decisive.
The biggest lead in the game was eight points, and there were 12 lead changes and 11 ties.
Stanley-Williams finished with nine points and two blocks for MSUM.
The Dragons are now done with nonconference play and will play at UMary on Thursday to resume NSIC play.
