BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota soccer team (3-9-1, 1-4-0 Summit) fell 2-0 to South Dakota State (14-1-1, 5-0-1 Summit) at Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday afternoon, marking the first meeting since 2019 where the match did not go into overtime between these two programs.
Both teams played fairly even with the Jackrabbits holding a 7-6 edge in shots in the first half, but it was the final two shots of the opening period for South Dakota State that proved to be the difference. SDSU found the back of the net for the game-winner in the 30th minute when Maya Hansen scored off her right foot for her 13th goal this season, a mark currently leading the Summit League. The Jackrabbits added an insurance goal less than two minutes later when Avery Murdzek buried a goal into the top right portion of the net.
North Dakota was outshot by a 10-7 margin in the second half, concluding the match with SDSU holding a 17-13 advantage in shots. The Fighting Hawks finished with four shots on goal, compared to the Jackrabbits recording five shots on frame. Both teams attempted four set pieces in the contest. Both teams played aggressively in the match with a total of 22 fouls called, 15 of them against UND.
Bailey McNitt led the North Dakota attack with four shots (one on frame), while Olivia Valdivia and Hannah Olson each recorded three shots with one shot on goal. Mary Gasaway was the final Hawk to attempt a shot on goal. Taylor Lange and Mara Yapello also had one scoring attempt apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Madi Livingston was one of five Hawks to play the full 90 minutes. She earned three saves on the afternoon. Gasaway, Lange, JoJo Prisock and Lexi Miller were the other players for UND to record the full 90 minutes.
The Fighting Hawks return to home on Friday to host the Pioneers. North Dakota and Denver are slated to square off at 3 p.m. at Bronson Field.
