WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The North Dakota State men’s golf team closed the first day of the Zach Johnson Invitational at the top of the leaderboard, as the Bison lead by two shots after finishing 36 holes at -1 on Monday at the Glen Oaks Country Club.
The Bison started the day with a +1 team score of 285 in the opening round, before carding a -2 round of 282 to sit atop the leaderboard in the 15-team field. The Bison hold a two-shot lead over Loyola-Chicago and a three-shot lead over host Drake heading into the final round on Tuesday.
Brock Winter had a strong start for the Bison, firing his best round of the season to open up the event, carding a -4 round of 67. Winter started the day with a birdie on his third hole and then added another birdie on his ninth hole to move to -2. After a bogey, Winter recovered with three birdies over the final six holes in the first round.
Winter would card another under-par round in the evening session, as he had five birdies and nine pars in the round to shoot a -1 score of 70. Winter sits in third overall in the 84-golfer field. Through two rounds, Winter leads all golfers in par-4 scoring, shooting -4 on the day. Winter was also -3 on the par 5s and is third in the tournament field with 10 birdies.
Nate Adams was also under par for the Bison in the first round, as he shot a -1 round of 70 to open up the day. Adams had just one blemish on the scorecard in the first round with a double bogey on hole 13. However, Adams carded three birdies, including two in the final eight holes to move up the leaderboard and close round one in eighth.
Adams would card birdies on two of the first five holes in round two. After struggles midway through the second round, Adams closed strong with two birdies over the final five holes on the day to move back into the top 10 as he finished the round with another score of 70 to close the day at -2. He enters the final day sitting in sixth overall.
The second-best round of the day for the Bison came from Josh Galvin, who carded a -2 round of 69 in the second round on Monday. After a 77 in the opening round, Galvin carded four birdies in round two, including back-to-back birdies to end the day. Galvin will enter the final round tied with teammate Jack Johnson in 26th overall at +4.
Johnson carded back-to-back rounds of 73 on the first day. Johnson was tied for fourth in par-5 scoring and also carded one of two eagles on the day for the Bison.
The Bison will wrap up the Zach Johnson Invitational on Tuesday with the third and final round at the Glen Oaks Country Club. The final round is set to begin at 9 a.m.
