CHESTERTON, Ind. – Featuring a quintet of newcomers that included four freshmen, the University of North Dakota secured a top-10 finish at the Valpo Fall Invitational as the Fighting Hawks closed the competition with its best round of the competition.
Freshman Lucas Feterl led North Dakota in the final round, shooting a 71 (-1) to record his first under par round of his collegiate career, as he finished the tournament tied for 22nd. Feterl carded a 228 as he used his last round to rebound from a first day score of 157. Feterl was the lone Hawk to finish all three rounds with scores under 80.
“It was good to get four freshmen on the road to experience their first full Division I competition this week at Sand Creek,” said Head Coach Todd Schaefer. “Luc has a tremendous amount of skill and I’m looking forward to watching him to do great things at the University of North Dakota.”
Feterl’s classmate Zach Hinschberger opened the tournament with the then-strongest round of the tournament as he shot a 73 (+1) to finish the first 18-holes in the field’s top-10. The Grand Forks product closed the tournament tied for 34th as he posted back-to-back 80s in the second and third rounds.
Grayson Wetch was the final UND golfer to finish in the top-50, highlighted by his second round 75 (+3) at Sand Creek Country Club. Wright State defended its crown, finishing the tournament with a team score of 854 (-10), a single stroke ahead of second place finisher Valparaiso and 38 ahead of third place Green Bay.
North Dakota will return to the links on Sept. 27 when it heads to Des Moines, Iowa for the Zach Johnson Invitational.
