BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (MSHSL) – The 2020 State Boys’ Swimming & Diving Meet is scheduled for February 27-29 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Here is a look at the meet:

2020 Preview
200-yard medley relay
Class A — Breck/Blake, the two-time defending champion, returns with the best qualifying time of 1:36.13. The other returning teams are Sartell-St. Stephen (runner-up); Austin, (fourth) and St. Thomas Academy (fifth).
Class AA — Wayzata returns to defend its relay crown. The others are Rochester Mayo (runner-up); Minnetonka (third); Eden Prairie (fifth); Chaska/Chanhassen (sixth); Lakeville North (seventh), and Stillwater Area (eighth). Wayzata has the best qualifying time of 1:33.35.
200-yard freestyle
Class A — Niels Wu of Breck/Blake was runner-up in 2019 and Cooper Larson of Sartell-St. Stephen was eighth. Winona’s Jack Herczeg has the fastest qualifying time of 1:41.18.
Class AA — Luke Ridler of Chaska/Chanhassen, who placed fifth last year, is the highest returning medalist. Eagan’s Jackson Kehler (sixth) and Rochester Century’s Grafton Parlette (seventh) also return. Kehler is this year’s fastest qualifier at 1:40.15.
200-yard individual medley
Class A — Minnehaha Academy’s Andrew Karpenko is the two-time defending champion and has the best qualifying time of 1:52.67. James Pan of Breck/Blake was runner-up in 2019, and Winona’s Grant Wolner was third. Also returning are Austin’s Logan Kelly (fifth) and Marcus Benson of Park Rapids Area (sixth).
Class AA — Defending champion Hayden Zheng of St. Louis Park is back with the fastest qualifying time (1:49.04). Other returnees are Wayzata’s Casey Stowe (third); Edina’s Jacob Biscan (fifth); Mounds View’s Isaac Pan (sixth) and Minnetonka’s John Wargin (sixth).
50-yard freestyle
Class A — Alexandria Area’s Nicolas Welle is the only returner and he has the fastest qualifying time of 20.97.
Class AA — Eden Prairie’s Soren Dunn was fifth in 2019 and Evan Bock of Chaska/Chanhassen was seventh. Owen Nord of Rochester Century is the fastest qualifier at 20.98.
1-meter diving
Class A — Simley’s Garrett Kaiser was third in 2019.
Class AA — Stillwater Area’s Josiah Fick is the defending champion. Also returning are Bloomington Jefferson’s Sam Wallace (runner-up); St. Michael-Albertville’s Tyler Barrett (third); Eastview’s Alex Sulistyo (fourth); Minnetonka’s Oliver Poitevent (fifth); Elk River’s Sam Hlavachek (seventh); and Buffalo’s Quincy Kabe (eighth).
100-yard butterfly
Class A — Winona’s Grant Wolner, the runner-up in 2019, has the fastest qualifying time of 50.59. Austin’s Rafe Dolan Peterson (fourth) and Hibbing’s William Stenson (eighth) also return.
Class AA — Eden Prairie’s Alex Deng was third in 2019 and Mounds View’s Isaac Pan was eighth. Mounds View’s Evan Bock is the fastest qualifier at 49.29.
100-yard freestyle
Class A — Winona’s Jack Herczeg is the two-time defending champion. He has the fastest qualifying time of 45.14 in hopes of a three-peat.
Class AA — Eden Prairie’s Soren Dunn was third in 2019. Minneapolis Washburn’s Alex Hawkins (seventh) and Edina’s Liam DeMuth (eighth) also return. Rochester Century’s Grafton Parlette is the fastest qualifier at 45.91.
500-yard freestyle
Class A — Niels Wu of Breck/Blake is the defending champion. Also returning are St. Thomas Academy’s Alexander Adams (fourth); Winona’s Tanner Lozenski (sixth); and Alexandria Area’s Anthony Hoyt (seventh). Hoyt is the fastest qualifier at 4:48.66.
Class AA — Luke Ridler of Chaska/Chanhassen was fifth in 2019 and Eagan’s Jackson Kehler was seventh. Kehler is the fastest qualifier at 4:34.15.
200-yard freestyle relay
Class A — Breck/Blake is the returning champion and the fastest qualifier at 1:26.86. Also returning are Winona (runner-up); Alexandria Area (third); Sartell-St. Stephen (fifth); Mankato West (sixth) and Hibbing (eighth).
Class AA — Edina is the defending champion. Chaska, which has the fastest qualifying time at 1:26.04, was runner-up in 2019. Mounds View (fourth); Stillwater Area (fifth); Minnetonka (sixth); Rochester Century (seventh) and Eden Prairie (eighth) also return.
100-yard backstroke
Class A — Charlie Crosby of Breck/Blake, who was second in 2019, has the fastest qualifying time of 49.58. Also returning are Marcus Benson of Park Rapids Area (third); Austin’s Rafe Dolan Peterson (fourth); St. Michael-Albertville’s Liam Noble (seventh); and Alexandria Area’s Thomas Williams (eighth).
Class AA — Wayzata’s Casey Stowe is the defending champion and fastest qualifier at 49.17. Edina’s Keegan Duffy (sixth) and Josiah Dunker of Chaska/Chanhassen (seventh) also return.
100-yard breaststroke
Class A — Minnehaha Academy’s Andrew Karpenko is the defending champion. Also returning are Austin’s Logan Kelly (runner-up); James Pan of Breck/Blake (third); Mitchell Brown of Breck/Blake (sixth); and Mound Westonka’s Josh Johnston (seventh). Kelly is the fastest qualifier at 56.16.
Class AA — Hayden Zheng of St. Louis Park is the two-time defending champion and the fastest qualifier at 54.41. Also returning are Wayzata’s Nick Kale (runner-up); Eden Prairie’s Alex Deng (third); Maple Grove’s Kelby Modene (fourth); Minnetonka’s John Wargin (fifth); Minnetonka’s Knute Wargin (sixth); and Forest Lake’s Maxamilian True (seventh).
400-yard freestyle relay
Class A — Blake/Breck is the defending champion. Also returning are Winona (runner-up); Alexandria Area (third); St. Thomas Academy (fourth); Austin (fifth); and Delano/Watertown-Mayer (eighth). Winona has the best qualifying time at 3:11.02.
Class AA — Edina is the defending champion and has the fastest qualifying time of 3:09.81. Also returning are Chaska/Chanhassen (runner-up); Eden Prairie (third); Wayzata (fourth); Eagan (fifth); Rochester Century (sixth); and Farmington (eighth).
2019 State Meet Recap
Class A: The co-op of Breck/Blake won its third consecutive title and fifth overall with 423 points. Northfield, which included students from Arcadia Charter School of Northfield, was second with 188 points. Winona, which included students from Cotter of Winona, placed third at 177 points.
Four Class A records were set in 2019. Andrew Karpenko of Minnehaha Academy set the new standard in both the 200 individual medley (1:48.05) and 100 breaststroke (54.41). Anderson Breazeale of Breck/Blake completed the 100 backstroke in 48.57 in the preliminaries and also competed on the record-setting 200 medley relay team (1:31.26). James Pan, Spencer Pruett, and Dylan Brown rounded out that squad.
Class AA: Edina won its 11th title at the 2019 state meet. Chaska/Chanhassen was second with 205 points and Wayzata placed third with 176 points.
Edina’s Peter Larson set two Class AA and all-time records in the preliminaries. He completed the 50 freestyle in 19.97 and the 100 freestyle in 43.46. Hayden Zheng was the only other competitor to set a Class AA and all-time record. He swam the 100 breaststroke in 53.86.
