FARGO (KFGO) – The North Dakota Farmers Union has delivered 40,000 pounds of spareribs to the Great Plains Food Bank, bolstering protein supplies for families experiencing food insecurity across North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota.
The donation is part of a five-state giving initiative by Farmers Union Enterprises, which is distributing pork to food banks across South Dakota, Montana and Wisconsin. Sourced from Redwood Farms in Estherville, Iowa, the spareribs will be funneled through a network of more than 200 food pantries, shelters and meal sites serving over 100 communities.
The contribution comes as hunger relief agencies face record demand. During its most recent fiscal year, the Great Plains Food Bank served a record 186,366 people, a 16% increase over the prior year, while distributing 15.4 million pounds of food.

“Donations like this one from Farmers Union make a meaningful difference for our neighbors,” said Ann Prifrel, chief executive officer of the Great Plains Food Bank. “A donation of 40,000 pounds of protein represents food on the table for thousands of families who struggle with hunger.”
North Dakota Farmers Union President Matt Perdue credited regional livestock producers for making the effort possible.
“Strong communities are those where neighbors support each other,” Perdue said. “We are thankful to be able to make this donation and thankful for the farmers who raised the quality pork.”
As the state’s sole food bank, the Great Plains Food Bank relies on contributions from agricultural groups, grocers and manufacturers to maintain its regional food supply. Over its 44-year history, the organization has distributed more than 256 million meals to children, seniors and families.
