ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota house Democrats sent a letter to Republican Speaker Lisa Demuth requesting a full ban on guns in house spaces for any non-law enforcement visitors at the State Capitol complex.
Democrats have been pushing to ban guns at the capitol for years, but have renewed that effort since the June 14 political attacks that killed former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and wounded Senator John Hoffman and his wife, and in response to Representative Walter Hudson found drunk in a car driven by another legislator while carrying a gun.
The letter pointed out that Minnesota is one of only seven states that allows open carry of firearms at the Capitol.
