GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics)– Junior defenseman Abram Wiebe was named NCHC Defenseman of the Month for February, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Wiebe paced all NCHC skaters with 11 points during the month, potting two goals and dishing out nine assists over the eight games. The Mission, British Columbia, native helped North Dakota going 6-2-1 with no regulation losses during February and captured the Penrose Cup as NCHC regular season champions on the penultimate day of the month.
He had points in six of the eight games, including four multi-point games and a career-best three assist night in a win at Minnesota Duluth. Wiebe finished with 10 blocked shots and was a plus-6 rating while becoming only the second blueliner in league history to win three straight NCHC Defenseman of the Week honors.
Wiebe is the sixth UND player to earn an NCHC monthly honor this season, joining Ben Strinden (Forward, November), Will Zellers (Rookie, November), Jake Livanavage (Defenseman, December), Jan Špunar (Rookie, December) and Ellis Rickwood (Forward, January).
North Dakota opens the NCHC Frozen Faceoff as the No. 1 seed and will battle No. 8 seed Omaha in the quarterfinals beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. (CT) from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
