FARGO (KFGO) – After the City of Fargo released redacted results of an employee engagement survey with city employees and city leaders following an open records request by KFGO News, Commissioner Denise Kolpack is calling for the unredacted results.
“I believe it took courage for employees to share their comments with candor and redacting them, to me, is an example of minimization,” Kolpack said. “But, importantly, I understand that North Dakota open records regulations don’t support the redactions.”
The anonymous survey was conducted online. 711, or 68%, of city employees responded. The survey questions attempted to explore employee engagement, which CPS HR defines as the connection between the employee and their organization. Based on employees’ responses to the survey, an engagement score was calculated for each employee. The survey found that 69% of city employees are engaged. Overall, 18% of city employees are “fully engaged,” 51% are “somewhat engaged” and 31% are “not engaged.”
Kolpack says the results pointed to issues like pay, benefits, support, transparency, and morale.
“There were several candid comments about employees feeling demoralized by what they see from elected officials and how administration needs to improve overall internal communication and transparency with employees across the board,” Kolpack said. “We cannot let this slip, and we must do the work with sincerity and a sense of urgency. Our greatest asset, our people, deserve and expect it.”
Building off the survey results, the Human Resources Department plans to conduct employee feedback sessions to gain a better understanding of opportunities for improvement and to prioritize actions to enhance overall employee experience.
Kolpack expects the unredacted results will be released in the coming days.
