MINNEAPOLIS (MNN/KFGO) – The University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering has successfully 3-D printed a realistic human tissue simulant that can be used for doctors in training.
With 3-D printing, lead researcher Adarsh Somayaji says the dimensions of the print lines can be fine tuned. Improving rigid results from previous methods.
“So we are interweaving the print lines at a really small scale on top of each other to get the anatomic mechanical properties that is consistent with the mechanics of human skin.” Somayaji said.
Somayaji says they also added tiny fluid-filled capsules to imitate blood. He believes the development could advance surgical training by years.
