WASHINGTON — A back-and-forth ball game ended with the Washington Mystic beating the Minnesota Lynx 68-64.
The Lynx started out hot, earning themselves a 14 point lead in the first quarter. Alanna Smith was the team’s leading scorer, with 11 of their first 15 points and 26 points in the game, a career high.
Kiki Iriafen’s free throws in the last two seconds of the first quarter brought the difference down to just two points.
From there, Minnesota was never able to entirely regain control.
A layup by Shakira Austin earned the Mystic their first lead of the game with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. Austin led her team with 19 points and eight rebounds on the night.
The game finished with a total of seven lead changes.
The Lynx, who have averaged 80+ points per game this season, were held to just 64 points and made zero field goals in the last eight minutes of the matchup. In a sloppy offensive game, Jessica Shepard was the other Lynx who was able to get on the board in a meaningful way, scoring 12 points.
Lynx superstar Napheesa Collier, the league’s top scorer, remains out with a back injury as the team has now fallen to 12-2.
Minnesota remains on the road, traveling next to Atlanta to play the Dream (10-4).
