(KNFL/KFGO) – It was a battle of the birds in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this evening, as the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks took on the Sioux Falls Canaries in game 1, of a 3 game weekend series. It was a very hot day in Sioux Falls, with temperatures in the 90s, and the Canaries were looking to start hot at the plate.
Facing Redhawks pitcher, Kolby Kiser, in the bottom of the first, Calvin Estrada would send a RBI base-hit up the middle to get Sioux Falls on the board first at 1-0. Then, in the bottom of the 2nd, Jordan Barth would find the right pitch to swing, as he hit a solo home run, to make it 2-0 Canaries. The Redhawks would answer back though in the top of the 3rd. They would be facing off against Canaries starting pitcher, Thomas Dorminy, and Derek Maiben would have an RBI fielder’s choice that was almost ruled a hit. But, regardless, Fargo-Moorhead would be on the board at 2-1. Runs would be hard to come by throughout the majority of the game, until the 8th inning.
Redhawks rookie pitcher, Brenton Thiels, would be on in relief in the 8th replacing Tyler Wilson. He would give up a walk to start the inning to Mike Hart. Then, he’d face Jabari Henry in a 2-1 count, where Thiels threw 2 straight wild pitches, moving Hart to 3rd. Eventually, Henry would draw a walk. But then, the next at bat, now against Josh Rehwaldt, another wild pitch was thrown, scoring Mike Hart. It would be 3-1 Sioux Falls. Rehwaldt would draw a walk. Calvin Estrada would be up next and he watched 3 wild pitches in the at-bat alone. It would end up scoring Jabari Henry, making it 4-1. Finally, after Kyle Johnston was put into a relief role in the 8th, Joe Vos would be up, as he sent a ground ball to 3rd, where Derek Maiben would make a throwing error. That would score 2 runs to make it 6-1. Sioux Falls would then slam the door on Fargo-Moorhead in the 9th.
The losing pitcher was Redhawks starter, Kolby Kiser, who would finish with 6 innings pitched, while giving up 5 hits, 2 runs that were all earned, and 2 walks. Kiser would end up striking out 5. Meanwhile, Thomas Dorminy would be on a roll in his outing tonight getting the win. He also went 6 innings, while giving up 4 hits, 1 run that was earned, no walks, while striking out 8.
The Redhawks are back in action tomorrow for game 2 of the series against the Canaries from The Birdcage. The pregame show will begin at 2:45 PM on AM 740 The FAN/107.3 FM.
