CINCINNATI (AP) — A resurgence in the sixth inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 6-5 lead over the Minnesota Twins which they were able to cling to for the rest of the game.
The game started slow with a scoreless pair of innings. Byron Buxton’s 406 foot homer in the top of the third, his twelfth of the year, was the first notable offense of the game.
The fourth inning brought momentum back to the Reds. Twins starting pitcher David Festa walked Tyler Stephenson and Elly De La Cruz, allowing them to respond when Will Benson’s double drove both players home. A single by Jake Fraley earned him two more RBI, putting Cincinnati up 4-1.
Ty France reached base on a throwing error at the top of the sixth and Brooks Lee and Trevor Larnach followed with a single apiece. With the bases loaded, Harrison Bader’s home run to right center field, knocked over the wall by Jake Fraley’s glove, gave the lead back to Minnesota.
With two outs and no men on base in the bottom of the sixth, Fraley tried to make up for the mistake with a single. This sparked an offensive rally wherein Matt McLain hit a single before a double from TJ Friedl pushed both runners over home plate.
This marks the first time the Twins have sunk to .500 since May, and is their fifth straight loss. They will play two more games to finish out the series in Cincinnati before returning home to face the Milwaukee Brewers at the end of the week.
