(KNFL/KFGO) – It has been a magical season for the Moorhead Spuds baseball squad. After being a 7 seed in the Section 8AAAA tournament, they rolled their way to the Section Championship, where they would defeat STMA. That would get them their first Section title, and first state appearance in 35 years. Their first opponent in the Class AAAA was the Minnetonka Skippers. They were one of the best teams in the state and Moorhead would fall 8-4. It was a heart breaker for the Moorhead Spuds yesterday. However, they still had a chance to come home with some hardware in the Consolation Semi-Finals. They would be matched up against another excellent team in Class 4A in the Andover Huskies.
Andover would strike first in the 3rd on a Moorhead error making it 1-0. However, Carter Huotari smashed an RBI double to center field, tying the game at 1 in the top of the 5th. It would be back and forth, as Wyatt Myers launched a 2 run home run over the left field fence. The Huskies would lead 3-1, until Carson Heinsch lined a double to center field to make it 3-2 in the top of the 6th. In the bottom half of the 6th, Andover would erupt. Wyatt Myers drew a walk that scored the first run, Keaton Coe knocked in a run on an RBI single, Jaxon Knutson got a 2 run single, Drew Law ripped a 2 run double, and finally, Jameson Kuznia had an RBI single. That would make it a 7 run 6th on 6 hits for the Huskies who would be leading 10-2 going into the 7th.
10-2 would be the final score, as Andover would end up advancing to the Consolation Championship, and the Moorhead Spuds season would end. Andover would get 10 runs, on 12 hits, and they had no errors. Moorhead would collect 2 runs, on 5 hits, and they would commit 3 errors. The winning pitcher was Brett Buettner of Andover. He would pitching a complete 7 inning game, while giving up 5 hits, 2 runs that were all earned, while striking out 12. The losing pitcher was Drake Kunza of Moorhead. He would go 5 innings, while giving up 8 hits, surrendering 8 runs, 5 of which were earned, while striking out 6.
Despite the unfortunate ending, the 2025 Moorhead Spuds baseball squad, will be remembered for their incredible season, as well as their improbable run through the Section Tournament as a #7 seed, to make their first state appearance since 1990.
