Last updated: 2025-06-09
CO Tony Hams (Warroad North) spent the week checking area anglers and following up with various complaints. Hams received a report of two orphaned goldeneye ducklings. He took possession of the ducklings and transported them to a local rehab. Violations encountered were no license in possession, failure to have a fire extinguisher, and angling with extra lines.
CO Coby Fontes (Warroad South) spent time patrolling Lake of the Woods and the Beltrami Island State Forest. Fontes took enforcement action for possession of an overlimit of walleyes and juveniles without helmets on an ATV. Fontes also happily notes that the lady slippers have made their spring appearance.
CO Paul Kennedy (Baudette East) checked angling and ATV activity throughout the week. Most anglers were reporting success, although it was slow-going. He responded to and investigated a report of a bear being shot. Enforcement action for the week included an overlimit of walleyes, no license in possession, operating an ATV within the road right-of-way, and illegal-length fish.
CO Bobby Stringer (Thief River Falls West) reports another successful coordinated effort with the Kittson Co. Sheriff’s Office as two orphaned black bear cubs were successfully captured after the mother bear was shot and killed. Stringer wants to remind people that the TIP line is always a good avenue for reporting purposes. Overall, there was a moderate bite on the Red Lake River with ample catches observed. Enforcement action for the week included multiple no angling licenses, ATV violations, and failure to display information on minnow traps as required.
CO Nick Bruesewitz (Karlstad) spent the week checking angling activity and ATV traffic throughout the area. Violations addressed this week included angling with an extra line, transporting a watercraft with the plug in, and operating an ATV with juvenile passengers without helmets.
CO Brice Vollbrecht (Blackduck North) spent the week checking anglers on Upper Red Lake. Angler success remains good, but the size of the fish has decreased and most anglers report catching a lot of 11- and 12-inch fish. He assisted with scenario day at Camp Ripley and patrolled for off -highway vehicle activity.
CO Brianna Shaw (Blackduck South) spent the week patrolling for sport fishing and recreational vehicle activity. Additional time was spent addressing trespass complaints and nuisance animals. Enforcement action was taken for a violation of designated trout lake regulations.

Assistance was given at the 2025 CO Academy at Camp Ripley as well.
CO Angela Warren (Mahnomen) spent time on angling and boating activity. AIS compliance checks were performed. Patrol was conducted for ATV and ORV activity.
CO Matthew Boyle (Pelican Rapids) spent the week checking anglers. Violations for the week included fishing without a license, illegal-length northern pike, no Type IV throwable, and operating dirt bikes on the roadway. He received multiple calls about “abandoned” fawns. Boyle would like to remind people that many times does will leave their fawn for a few hours while she finds food. Leave the fawn where it lays, and the mother will likely return.
CO Brady Manteufel (Bagley) answered questions and took phone calls about wildlife. Public water accesses were checked, and roads and trails were patrolled for ATV activity. Registration display on a watercraft was enforced and unmarked leech traps were investigated.
CO Curtis Jepson (District #2) reports checking anglers and conducting ATV enforcement throughout the district. Boating safety equipment violations were the most encountered during the week. He handled a wildlife call of a possibly injured and abandoned fawn. A reminder that an unattended fawn does not mean the fawn was abandoned by its mother. Please do not attempt to rescue and provide care to unattended newborn animals.
