FARGO (KNFL) – The Central Cass Squirrels claimed their seventh softball state title in program history May 30. The Squirrels defeated Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark 4-1 in the championship game.
“It never gets old, you know I’m so proud of these girls and how hard they work and all the work they put in to making this thing happen” Said Central Cass head coach Scott Kost.
The highlight of the contest was delivered by Sophie Scherweit, who homered to left field to put Central Cass in firm control of the contest 3-0 in the third inning.
“I really wanted that pitch, it was right down the middle. I was ready for it.” Scherweit said.
Scherweit paced the Central Cass offense with a pair of hits in the ballgame, she had one RBI and scored two runs on the bases.
Whitney Mitchell was the winning pitcher for the Squirrels in the win, the sophomore allowed no earned runs on five hits and struck out five.
Central Cass defeated Carrington 17-0 in the State Tournament Quarter-Finals and Beulah 9-2 in the Semi-Final round to make the championship game.
No Class B team bested the Squirrels all season, Central Cass had no seniors on their roster.
