GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics) – No. 14/15 North Dakota skated to a 3-3 tie with Bemidji State on Saturday night from a sold-out Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
North Dakota (7-7-1) battled back from a 1-0 deficit late in the first to build a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, but the middle frame saw the teams combine for three goals to level the game at 3-3 heading into the final regulation period.
After neither side could find the back of the net in the third, the goaltenders stood tall in the 3-on-3 overtime session to officially end the game in a 3-3 tie.
Owen McLaughlin (1), Carter Wilkie (2) and Jake Schmaltz (2) each found the back of the net for the Fighting Hawks, who potted a trio of goals at 5-on-5 for the first time since Nov. 8 at Minnesota Duluth. Goaltender T.J. Semptimphelter shined in a relief outing, stopping 18-of-18 over the final 42 minutes after sophomore Hobie Hedquist was pulled after allowing three goals on eight shots against.
BSU (7-6-2) struck first for the second straight night, as Adam Flammang fired a shot off the far post and in to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead just prior to the halfway point of the opening period. UND struck back late in the stanza, however, as McLaughlin made a great play in his own end to spring himself for a breakaway before roofing the puck over goaltender Mattias Sholl for his first goal of the season and a 1-1 tie with 1:34 to play in the first.
Just over a minute later, Wilkie gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead when he found a rebound off a Jake Livanavage slot in the crease and tucked it home for his first tally since Oct. 18 at Minnesota State to quickly send the hosts into the opening intermission with a lead.
Bemidji State would answer back quickly in the second, striking for two goals in just 49 seconds to take the lead back at 3-2. The lead only lasted 59 seconds, however, as Jackson Kunz created chaos in front of the net before Schmaltz jammed the puck over the line to bring the score even at 3-3 in the second.
UND had a chance to win the game in regulation, but McLaughlin’s shot ran the pipe and stayed out to send the game into overtime. The extra session also brought a few chances for the hosts, with both Wilkie and Sacha Bosivert generating golden chances, but the contest ended in a 3-3 tie.
North Dakota will resume NCHC play next weekend with a trip to Oxford, Ohio to battle Miami beginning on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. (CT).
