Marshall returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to spark No. 1-ranked North Dakota State to a 42-19 win over Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Football Conference on Saturday, Nov. 2.
It was the ninth straight win for North Dakota State, which improved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference heading into a bye week. The Bison return home to face second-place Missouri State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.
NDSU quarterback Cam Miller finished 17 of 20 passing for 216 yards and two touchdowns. He set a new school record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception at 311, breaking the mark of 307 set by Trey Lance from 2018 to 2020.
Bison running back CharMar Brown had his third 100-yard rushing game with 18 carries for 124 yards and one score. His 5-yard run capped a 13-play scoring drive that put the Bison ahead 14-3 late in the first quarter.
Miller completed touchdown passes of 14 yards to Bryce Lance and 15 yards to Braylon Henderson in the second quarter as the Bison opened up a 28-3 halftime lead. Barika Kpeenu added TD runs of 6 and 11 yards in the second half.
UNI (2-7, 0-5 MVFC) got its offense moving in the third quarter with back-to-back scoring drives. Quarterback Matthew Schecklman connected with Sergio Morancy on TD passes of 31 and 9 yards, and the Panthers converted both two-point conversions to make it a 35-19 game with 1:52 left in the third.
NDSU answered with a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by Kpeenu’s second TD early in the fourth, and the Bison stuffed UNI at the goal line twice to end a 12-play drive on downs before running out the final 5:52 of the game.
Linebacker Enock Sibomana was in on both goal-line stops for NDSU and finished with a team-high six tackles. NDSU safety Darius Givance and linebacker Nick Kubitz also had six tackles apiece.
The Bison, who entered the game leading the nation in turnover margin, recovered two more fumbles to move to plus-16 on the season. NDSU made nine tackles for loss.
