ST. PAUL – The new state flag and seal designs chosen by a special commission could become an issue when lawmakers return to the State Capitol in under a month and a half.
Republican Senator Steve Drazkowski from Mazeppa in southeast Minnesota says the people of Minnesota need to be heard, through their elected members of the Senate and the House, as to whether the flag and the seal that is a product of this committee should be approved or not. Drazkowski says he’ll introduce legislation to require a public referendum.
But Democratic Senator Mary Kunesh of New Brighton thinks the new flag design is going to serve Minnesota well into the future, and she is very proud of the people that participated and the work for positive change for Minnesota.”
Meanwhile, it’s expected the board in north-central Minnesota’s Crow Wing County will pass a resolution on Tuesday, Jan.2 opposing the redesign of the state flag and seal, which would be sent to the governor’s office and the legislature.
