ABERDEEN, S.D. (KFGO) – One man is dead and another is in jail after a shooting in the parking lot of the YMCA in Aberdeen Wednesday.
Aberdeen Police Capt. Tanner Jondahl said officers were called to the YMCA parking lot at 12:17 p.m. on a report of a shooting where a man was suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers began life-saving measures before the man was taken to the hospital where he died.
“The other individual involved with this situation remained on-scene,” Jondahl said. “A firearm was collected at the scene.”
Jondahl said that man has been detained, but has not yet been charged in the shooting. He said the shooting was an isolated incident and not related to the YMCA.
“We know that two vehicles pulled into the north entrance of our YMCA parking lot, and that’s where the shooting took place,” Jondahl said. “We’re still trying to understand why it happened, and why it happened there.”
Jondahl said the investigation is in its early stages and they are trying to find video surveillance that may help investigators.
Aberdeen Police, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, South Dakota BCI, Brown County Emergency Management, and Aberdeen Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.
