LANESBORO, Minn. – The 21st Governor’s Deer Opener is underway in Lanesboro in southeastern Minnesota. DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen:
“Minnesota governors have a long tradition of celebrating this day and, obviously, many Minnesotans have a much longer tradition of this day. And there are some Minnesotans who may be celebrating it for the first time,” Department of Natural Resources (DNR) commissioner Sarah Strommen said.
Eric Hildebrand with the DNR said there are 10 Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance zones and management areas across the state.
“Make a plan before you head to the field,” Hildebrand said. “Know which DPA, or Deer Permit Area, you are hunting in. And see if there are any CWD sampling requirements. A number of those DPA’s conducting surveillance have mandatory requirements.”
The DNR is urging those planning to use a deer blind on public land to keep safety in mind. There is a requirement for a blaze orange covering on a synthetic or cloth ground blind. So make sure if you are hunting on public land you’re in compliance with those regulations)
Around 400,000 people are expected to take part in the firearms deer hunt this year.
