(KFGO/KNFL) Wahpeton and Kindred earned wins on Monday and will face off in the championship game of the Class A State Legion Baseball Tournament in Kindred on Tuesday afternoon.
Kindred stayed alive with a 5-4 win over the West Fargo Vets to start the day. Trailing 3-1 after three innings, the Vikings scored three times to take the lead. Jack Packer doubled in a run, and two more scored on wild pitches.
Trailing 5-3 in its last at beat, the Vets cut the lead to a run on a double from Deng Duot. The Vets put runners and second and third with two out, but reliever Stan Belaskie got Owen Haugen to line out to right to end the game.
Wahpeton moved to 35-4 on the season with a 6-3 win over Casselton. The win eliminated the Haymakers, the defending 2022 Class A champs, from the tournament. Braxton Pauly fired a complete game, scattering nine hits and three runs.
Up 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wahpeton scored three times to break open the game. Josiah Hofman’s two-run double to center made it 4-0. Post 20 added two more in the sixth.
Pauly took a shutout to the seventh, but Casselton put up one final push. An RBI single from Carter Maasjo and a two-run double from Brayden Mitchell made it 6-3. Pauly finished the game by retiring Eli Buhr on a groundout to end the game.
Wahpeton will face Kindred at noon Tuesday at Viking Varsity Diamond. If Kindred wins, a second title game would follow.
