ST. PAUL, Minn. – A study released Wednesday looks at taxpayer payouts for police misconduct in Minnesota from 2010 through 2020.
“Approximately 30 percent of the governmental units in the state of Minnesota have made some payout for police misconduct – nearly 500 total incidents – and we’re looking at about $160 million,” Hamline University Professor David Schultz said.
Schultz said Minneapolis by far and away topped the list for total payouts at over $136 million. The Minneapolis number does not include $27 million the city paid to the estate of George Floyd in 2021.
Next on the list, but with a much lower total payout is Carlton County – $6.2 million for a search and seizure claim – followed by Saint Paul.
