ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is mourning the loss of a chick that died when the EagleCam fell out its tree Sunday morning.
Wildlife program leader Lori Naumann said they’ve feared for a few years that that tree was not going to hold that nest forever, and that’s what happened. Naumann said she suspects the recent heavy snow was likely the straw that broke the camel’s back.
The nest, first found in 2003, weighed about 2,000 pounds and the branch it was on broke off the tree and plummeted 100 feet to the ground. Naumann says the adult eagles were flying around the area afterward and might re-nest in the same tree, but it’s very unlikely the female would lay more eggs this season.
