NEW AUBURN, Minn. – The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says a 34-year-old man fatally shot by law enforcement in the south-central Minnesota town of New Auburn was armed with a hunting knife.
Investigators say Brent Alsleben died after being shot by three Hutchinson police officers.
His family asked the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office to do a welfare check on Wednesday afternoon and deputies say he swung a knife at first responders. The Hutchinson officers and two McLeod County deputies opened his apartment door early Thursday and spotted Alsleben on the floor with a knife. Officers say he struggled as they attempted to take him into custody, and he cut one of them. State agents say Tasers were unsuccessful on Alsleben and the officers shot him as he started to stand up.
The BCA says portions of the incident were caught on body camera footage.
